Lecture 7 (Strange Books)

 

* "Distant Reading" (use of computers to read in ways humans have never been able to before, including data-mining for patterns and trends)

  • Computers can be used in this way on single books (as in the case of Martin Paul Eve's Close Reading with Computers [2019], which uses computers to study patterns in a single novel).
  • They come into their own, however, when reading at scale--as in the case of thousands of novels (see, for example, Franco Moretti's Graphs, Maps, Trees [2005]) or millions of documents (see Jean-Baptiste Michel, Erez Lieberman Aiden, et al., "Quantitative Analysis of Culture Using Millions of Digitized Books" [2011]).

      • Using computers to read at Scale: "the study of national bibliographies made me realize what a minimal fraction  of the literary field we all work on: a canon of two hundred novels for instance, sounds very large for nineteenth-century Britain (and is much larger than the current one), but is still less than one per cent of the novels that were actually published: twenty thousand, thirty, more, no one really knows—and close reading won't help here, a novel a day every day of the year would take a century or so."       • Using computers to read for System: "And it's not even a matter of time, but of method: a field this large cannot be understood by stitching together separate bits of knowledge about individual cases, because it isn't a sum of individual cases: it's a collective system, that should be grasped as such, as a whole--and the graphs that follow are one way to begin doing this."       • Using computers to model patterns related to genres, cycles, generations: "'Distant reading', I have once called this type of approach; where distance is however not an obstacle, but a specific form of knowledge: fewer elements, hence a sharper sense of their overall interconnection. Shapes, relations, structures. Forms. Models." (p. 1)

 

* Taking stock of where we are: 

  • In each age, there is a "new media encounter" in which old media meet new media forms. Typically, terms like the following are used to contrast the familiar media to the new ones:
    • close vs. distant
    • deep vs. shallow
    • linear vs. non-linear
    • intensive vs. extensive
    • focal vs. peripheral
  • Some new media forms cross over from being alien to becoming internalized as close, deep, etc.--i.e., "true" to essential knowledge and human identity.
  • An interesting second issue is what happens to old media then. How do older media (like orality once literacy arrived) reposition themselves in the evolving media ecosystem? How do they change in function or adapt in form?

 

* The three "strange books" assigned for today are experiments in imagining the future of the book in the digital and networked age.

  • Each is very ambitious in imagining the goal for the future of the book. Each raises the bar for the value of the book to the highest standard of media in each age (and in the past specifically of the book): can it change you?
  • We can call this the "conversion" paradigm.
  • The logic of the conversion experience.,

          • Claude Shannon's master's thesis was on the relation between switching circuits and Boolean algebra. Binary logic was suited to the new, fast technology: switches, relays, vacuum tubes, transistors.

Why full lecture PowerPoints are not online for students:

 

  • As is often the case in humanities courses, the PowerPoints in English 25 are not in themselves self-sufficient substitutes for lectures. They are a kind of "wireframe" diagram of ideas that the professor fills in during lectures with contextual statements, connective transitions, analogies and anecdotes, and other reflections. In general, humanities courses tend to rely more on such real-time "filling in" of their intellectual wireframe diagram because they explore issues and works that open into historical, cultural, and philosophical contexts with no clear external boundaries and many interior complexities. Issues and works must thus often be interactively "thought through" in a stage-by-stage, back-and-forth, and pro- and con- way. Put simply, it's the job of the professor's real-time explanation and narration to carry the lesson. In other words: you had to be there.
  • In order to encourage students to be there for the lectures, therefore, PowerPoints for English 25 are not online. The "Lecture Supplementary Materials" provided on the course site provide many of the materials, topics, and points raised in the lectures as a study guide. But they do not substitute for the actual lectures.
  • In addition, PowerPoints often contain many images, audio, videos, and other material for which the professor has not cleared permissions for online reproduction.
  • Also, PowerPoints are lecture plans that are the professor's intellectual property. Professors want to have some control over the way their lecture notes are used by online audiences, which often include not just their own students but a variety of commercial online companies, "click-bait" algorithmically-generated web pages, and other third parties in the business of harvesting study materials and commodifying them.
  • Note: professors are aware that all these issues are fluid in today's digital age when there are new ways of thinking about the competing demands of closed versus "open" resources, intellectual property versus "access," and so on. While the digital transformation is evolving, however, professors and the universities they are part of want to have some agency in the way they engage with all the other stakeholders in the debate, including the corporate and government players in today's era of "knowledge work."
